Calling all knitters Time to dig out those knitting needles for the Big Knit
It’s the return of the Big Knit campaign and Age Concern is calling on Colchester to join in and get knitting!
Whether a knitting ninja, purling pro, crochet connoisseur or just keen to have a go it’s time to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit. Now in its 15thyear, the campaign is recruiting knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold*, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone.
Simon Prestney, Chief Officer of Age Concern Colchester said: “We need the people of Colchester to join us and help knit as many miniature hats as possible this winter to help us hit our 27,000 hat target. It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area.”
“The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Advice, Legal Advice, Befriending and a variety of regular groups and activities such as crafts, foreign language, games and exercise clubs which give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.”
Last year alone, more than one million hats were lovingly created, with designs including the hugely popular unicorn, grizzly bear, fluffy sheep and desert island.
Bara Amouyal, innocent drinks, said: “The Big Knit has had such an incredible amount of support over the past 15 years and we are hugely grateful – we love seeing what miniature creations the nation can come up with! Through the Big Knit campaign, we want to do everything we can to make a difference to the lives of older people.”
Every hat you make for us, we will convert into money so that we can crack on with the work we are doing around the borough making life easier for the vulnerable and those in later years.
To coin a phrase, each one could be a life line helping someone you know who is lonely and isolated, or possibly supporting a friend in need approaching us for guidance on finances. For each £1 raised we will be able to build it into something tangible to improve lives.
£10 will buy someone in poverty the support to fill in a form at home.
£20 will provide two hours of professional support to someone in need.
£50 will provide back office support for our volunteer service for a day
The money from every hat made will also be used to develop our existing infrastructure at 63 North Hill as we grow in size:
- External renovation with a friendship garden and improved access via a gradual ramp and shallow steps.
- Creating a Veranda entrance for extending our Community Cafe outside.
- Engaging more volunteers to befriend people who are experiencing loneliness.
- Building a bigger team to help more people out of poverty.
We are fundraising for the Veranda too which will transform the lives of many who come through our doors everyday.
The Veranda was launched earlier this year at Age Concern’s new premises on North Hill. The Veranda is aimed at bringing together people in later years with common interests to develop new friendships. Whether gardening, knitting, bereaved or otherwise simply looking to be at a place where people look out for one another, we can offer you a warm welcome and great hospitality, helping those in later years live life better. The term Veranda was chosen because it is universal for a place of leisure and community, which is particularly important as Colchester comprises of more diverse groups of people. Age Concern Colchester always has and will strive to be considered an inclusive organisation. The Veranda will be the new hang out at Age Concern including our many friendship groups:
- Art Club
- Bridge Club
- Catching the Mouse IT Club
- Coffee Morning
- Knit and Natter
- Line Dancing
- Practical Spanish
- Senior Us Social Club
- Warm & Toasty Club
