Today we met with Simon Prestney hto find out all about this local charity, first formed in 1950, that has helped thousands of local people, and, get this, projects to have 10,000 visitors- THIS YEAR, based on opening in September!
We are of course, referring to the fantastic
‘Age Concern Colchester!’
Based at 63, North Hill (in the old Army Recruitment building). A fantastic local charity aiming to help those over age 60.
With a team ready to help visitors with things such as;
-Finance Options (such as P.I.P advice)
This is a very helpful local facility, for those who may need some help or guidance, in areas of their life as mentioned above. Importantly, financial advice is up to 80% of Age Concern Colchester’s workload!
Age Concern Colchester, has helped it’s users get a total of £1.3 MILLION, pounds worth of benefits they are entitled to that they otherwise might not have got- so you know this is the place to get your advice from- they are on your side!
Age Concern Colchester, also runs a ‘Befriending’ service. This is currently enjoyed by 70 people, in home environments.
A service where local volunteers spend a valuable amount of time with a resident, doing enjoyable things such as; having a coffee and a chat, a small bit of gardening together, sharing stories, and more. Age Concern Colchester, always matches the interests of the Befriender, with the resident- to make it a great benefit for both people!
What a lovely way to devote a small amount of your time!
Perhaps YOU could become a Befriender in the Colchester area? Contact Emily Jayne Goodbody, for more details.
If you were to visit the Age Concern Colchester, veranda (the name given to the communal area on the ground floor), you would be able to find sessions, such as; ‘Friendship Club’, ‘Health In Mind & Body’, or ‘Emotional’ or ‘Educational Support’, and more. Fun events such as Bingo, Bridge, and Knitting, as well as the more serious but helpful topics like; Supporting Loss, Legal Surgery and Pension Surgery- there are sessions, and activities for all users aged 60 and over. Sessions may charge a nominal 50p, per hour.
There are many activities available for the aged over 60, user! You would be one of the 250 visitors the veranda gets every week! With regular visitors, and new users, this is a great way to meet old friends, and create new friendships, with like minded people.
If you, or someone you know, is aged 60 or over, who could benefit from new friendship, or advice, in one of the areas mentioned, perhaps would like to get involved in some new activities, send them, or bring them, to, Age Concern Colchester, at the top of North Hill.
The building is a great hub for users of the services available. With tea and coffee readily available, pop in anytime for a cuppa, and a chat!
One of the aims within the building itself, is to transform the unused area out the front into a user-friendly, garden area, where visitors can sit and enjoy a drink, and a get- together. With a new slope to enable wheelchair access from the front of the building, and steps to the other side of the garden.
This improvement is going to cost in the region of £30,000 to complete. We have included a link to the Crowd Funding page here, https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/age-concern any donations towards this, are very much appreciated.
Remember, this facility is for the people of Colchester aged 60 and over to get great advice, support, and friendship, so is very worthy of your support- whether that’s by donation, or your time volunteering, or even just liking and sharing this post. It all helps.
